It was great to see many faces show up to the fleet 84 meeting at Boston's! We got a lot accomplished and are looking forward to a great summer. We really need to promote the fleet and increase membership this year.

Jim Sohn has a booth at the sports show this Wednesday through Sunday. (Feb. 15-19) He first asked us if we would like to set up a spot to promote our group at his booth. After further inquiry, we now have a booth of our own! It is a 10 by 10 spot. Todd and I are quicky coming up with some props and information. Ryan is creating a brochure for a sailing seminar for new sailors on June 4th and/or June 18th. Roger is putting together a CD with sailing pictures. We think this is a great opportunity to really promote our sport! We are calling on all members to show up and help out - talking to people and answering questions. Here is a schedule of who has signed up and times. If you want to show up please call Jim Sohn, who will be at the entire show, for an exhibitor badge.

Thursday the show runs from 2-9 : Ryan - 5:30-9:00

Friday open from 2-9: Jamie - 2-9

Saturday open from 10-9: Kelly 10-12, Ryan 10-5, Roger 5-9, John 12-5, Todd or Angie - throughout the day

Sunday open from noon to 5: Steve 12-2, Roger 2-5

We voted to buy three bouys, one being donated by the Hobie 20 nationals fund. We also are going to try having Thursday night fleet races beginning June 1st. We will tell you more about this later! The regatta was discussed and I will get back to you with more next month. If you can help out, we'd love to see you at the show!

It's Already the End of the Season!

The Hobie 18 & 20 Nationals was a super success in Clear Lake! It was really neat to see first hand (through my husband) what really goes into a week long national sailing regatta. I am very proud of all the hard work he and many others put into it. If you can ever attend or help out with a national event it is a great experience.

Blue balls is right around the corner! Sunday, October 2nd is set for the fun race to the dam and back. Meet us at the upper ramp at Cherry Glen around 1:00 or so. Bring some food or Chilli to eat! We will hang out and sail.

Ryan Richardson has several Knoxville high school students who are interested in trying sailing. Could we give them a taste of Hobie 16 sailing at the Oct. 2nd Blue Balls event? If you would give a student a ride or like to have one for crew please call him! Ryan Richardson 641-820-0502

North American Championship Sailing Event - Clear Lake, IA

North American Championship Sailing Event - Clear Lake, IA

On Sunday, September 11th, 2005, more than 100 National caliber Catamaran Sailors will converge on Clear Lake, Iowa for the 2005 Hobie 18 and 20 North American Championship Event. Hosts for this event are Hobie Division 7 (Midwest Division) and Hobie Fleet 10 of Clear Lake.

Sailors are expected to travel from as far as Florida, California, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Canada and Mexico. This is an end-of-the season championship event that many sailors have been preparing for since this time last year. Sailors will launch from the State Park Beach on Monday morning, September 12. Racing will occur on Monday thru Friday, with an Awards Banquet on Friday night. Sailors will be racing every day on Clear Lake

The highly competitive Hobie 20 fleet is expecting Five time National Hobie 20 Champion Phil Collins from Oklahoma, John Tomko of Texas - current Hobie Tiger National Champion, and many other nationally ranked rock stars in the sailing community. The registration list reads like a who's who of the sailing world.

The Hobie 18 Fleet is also load with talent. Local favorite Jim Sohn of Des Moines and his Internationally ranked crew - Kristin King of Vadnais Heights, MN are expected to place high in the event.

Hello Everyone!
Here is some Regatta news and an update.
Christina Bradshaw and her family are moving to Kansas City and she is
resigning as Treasurer. She has done a wonderful job over the years and
we will all miss her as a fleet officer and an awsome crew!

Marilyn Hart has stepped up to take her place as treasurer. She is
already doing the food for the regatta and is now taking on the
registration. She would like to have some help for registration on
Friday night and Saturday morning. She also needs some people to
provide an egg dish for Saturday or Sunday mornings. If you could bring
one give her a call.

Beach cleanup is Tuesday August 16th at the Cherry Glen upper ramp. I
am not sure how much needs to be done. We may need some weed wackers,
rakes, and shovels. Please show up if you can!

We would like fleet 84 members to bring goodies for the Friday night
registration. Anything would be great. Just bring them to the Cherry
Glen upper boat ramp Friday night.

We are hoping for a great turn out for the Youth Regatta on Friday, Aug.
18th. This will be held at the Big Creek beach area/boat access area.
Call Jim Sohn if you have any questions at 554-0680. It will be a fun
event welcome to kids of all abilities. Hobie waves will be provided.
This is a great event to get our kids excited about sailing! Lunch will
be provided for the kids.

Kim has reserved a very large campsite loop at Prairie Flower campground
at for the regatta. If you are camping please plan on staying at this
reserved Hobie loop.

I hope to see everyone at the Saylorville Regatta on August 20th and
21st! Let's pray for wind!!!!

Fleet 84 Saylorville Ice Breaker

We're officially into sailing season! We kicked off the spring with our first event on Sunday. We had five boats race to the dam and back. The wind was great and it was a bit chilly! Just right for the first time out and surprisingly everyone stayed dry. We ended the race with some great chilli and sailing talk! Here are the race results:

1st - Jaime Mauk & Jill Bassman on an 18,

2nd - Ryan Richardson & Don Vaske on a 16,

3rd - Roger Taha sailing solo on his 16,

4th - Todd Wilson on his 14,

5th - Eric Foresman & Allen Foresman on a 16.

Others member that showed up were: Kelly and Marilyn Hart with some great white bean chilli, Jim Sohn - late and with NO boat, I guess he had some good excuse, and Danielle and Sari Taha. Reagan and I were there too, providing chilli, chips and moral support!

We hope to see you all this weekend at the Ice Breaker in Clear Lake or later this summer. Remember to sign up to become an HCA member!

Hobie Friends,
Well, we officially had our 1st fleet meeting of the year. Everyone seems to be excited about sailing and ready to go! We discussed the schedule and added 3 fun races to it. We also talked about the Regatta in August. It looks like we will have Saturday's main meal and maybe brunch catered. If anyone has any great ideas let me know! It looks like we will plan on up to 175
people.

I need to ask all of you to send in your fleet dues if you already haven't.

It is really important this year to register with HCA. You must be a member to participate in the points regatta's in Division 7. We also need you to register to get our regatta insurance. Once you register you will get a membership number. Please email this to me. I will have to send a list of our registered members to HCA for insurance purposes. HCA's website is www.nahca.org.

Please add these dates to your regatta schedule:
May 15th - Saylorville Ice Breaker - 1:00 fun race to the dam and back!
Bring chilli and snacks!

July 10th - Fun Sail at Big Creek - meet around 12:00 & bring a picnic
lunch to the boat ramp/marina area.

Oct. 2nd - Blue Balls - 1:00 fun sail to the dam and back at Saylorville -
Bring Chilli!

If you like to get up close to the action, but not “in” the action, volunteer to help on the committee boat. Hold signal flags, count down with the timer, or write down sail numbers as the boats finish. And don’t forget to snap a few pictures in between.

Fleet 84's Ice Breaker will be held May 15. Plan to arrive and be set up on the beach by 1 pm.
Saylorville Lake, Cherry Glenn boat ramp.

Fleet 84 Fun Sail will be at Big Creek at 1 pm on Sunday July 10th. Meet at Marina Boat ramp. We'll have a course set up. We may grill out prior to the sail. Check back for details.
